Kiss Me at Midnight NYE 2025
Besos de pisco - Poem
Those closest to me know that I believe in the Red String Theory. I’m sure by now it’s cliché, but thinking that somewhere out there is my person has kept me going through a very challenging year.
One thing that helps ground me is writing to him. I write him letters, but mostly I write him poems. And when I write him poems, they come out in Spanish. For context, I have spent over a decade learning Spanish. I am not perfect at it, but I love learning more every chance I get. Anymore, I feel like I spend half my life engaging in Spanish. So, it’s just natural at this point that sometimes my thoughts and emotions come out in Spanish.
Tonight, New Year’s Eve, I thought I would share one of the poems I wrote him. I did a rough translation into English for anyone who does not speak Spanish. It’s not a masterpiece, but I hope you enjoy it.
And Love, if you’re reading this, if this finds you, know that at midnight tonight, my soul is kissing yours.

Devuélvame al espacio
Déjame allá en la puerta
que abre a la brecha
y otra vez podemos fingir el amor
con estas caricias nocturnas
que me das entre almas.
Si solo pudiéramos encadenarnos a cuerpos,
me trasladaría a tu lado
para hacer un peregrinaje
a la figura de un rey
y recorrería la inquietud de tu piel
hasta caerme en tus besos de pisco.
English Translation (done by me): Pisco Kisses
Take me back to that space
Leave me there in the doorway
that opens to the breach
and once again, we can feign love
with these nocturnal caresses
that you give me between souls.
If only we could tie ourselves to bodies,
I would rush to your side
to make a pilgrimage
of the figure of a king,
and traverse the restlessness of your skin
until I fall into your pisco kisses.
*It’s not entirely a literal translation, but the meaning is the same. I made some small changes to make it fit better into English. Also, I think this is the first time I have translated one of my own poems into English.
